• Perhaps the only way to end the evening is to listen to these three nocturnes played by Maria Joao Pires. Oh! to be able to even become close to her playing of this work of exquisite beauty, longing and pleasure!

• A wistful nocturne, but longing for distant lands?

• A light and apparently carefree nocturne, but listen carefully and ask: what is going on here?

• A solemn nocturne – there is much passion here but resolving into a stillness reminiscent of the quietness of the early hours.

• On a first hearing the F# in this delightful nocturne should penetrate the air like the sound of a bell in the still air at 1am.

• Atmospheric is a rather contemporary description of this delightful little piece, but even so I fail to understand the 3-4 section. Perhaps one day it shall master me.

• Chopin is always delightful, and sometimes Chopin is fun….
