Sandi

On marriage:

Il y a une femme d’AA
Qui a une belle baiser.
Elle s’appelle Sandi
Elle a prendu un mari
À lui, pour toujours, fidelés.

Ode to a PC

Just as I imagined.
You had begun to care
Until I crashed,
Ungracefully, under your living stare.

Desparately now needing
Your soft touch still to know
Incandescently waiting
My face is all aglow.

Touch me I pray you,
Let your fingers come nigh,
Have pity now upon me
Whose mem’ry is but a sigh.

Helen Field was a girl from Barnet
Earnestly liked by all whom she met
Lively and witty
Exceptionally pretty
Never a day passed but was kept.

Wenn der Schnee

Wenn der Schnee – Georg Trakl 1887-1914

© Stuart Moffatt 1972

Wenn der Schnee ans Fenster fällt,
lang die Abendglocke läutet.
Vielen ist der Tisch bereitet
und das Haus ist wohl bestellt.

Mancher auf der Wanderschaft
kommt ans Tor auf dunklen Pfaden.
Golden blüht der Baum der Gnaden
aus der Erde kühlem Saft.

Wanderer tritt still herein.
Schmerz versteinerte die Schwelle.
Da erglänzt in reiner Helle
auf dem Tische Brot und Wein.

It was many years after it had been suggested to Coco that a very sensitive version of Trakl’s work had been produced by Anton Webern. Coco was not sure at the time that was a serious suggestion, but perhaps it had been an early work. In due course Coco found a copy which he has scored. You may hear and judge the results in this mp3. If you would like a copy of the midi file to improve the performance, Coco shall be quite happy to provide it, on the understanding that you will share a copy of the revised and improved file with him.

Goe, lovely rose

Goe, lovely rose,
Goe, lovely rose,
Goe, lovely, lovely rose,
tell her that wastes her time and mee,
tell her that wastes her time and mee,
tell her that wastes her time and mee,
that now she knows, she knows,
that now she knows, she knows,
that now she knows
when I resemble her to thee,
when I resemble her to thee,
when I resemble her to thee,
how sweet and fair she seems to be.
how sweet and fair she seems to be.
she seems to be
she seems to be.

2 Tell her that’s young
And shuns to have her graces spied
That hadst thou sprung,
in deserts where no man abide
Thou must uncommended died

3 Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retir’d
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herselfe to be desir’d
And not blush so to be admir’d

4 Then dye, that shee
The common fate of all things rare
May read in thee,
How small a part of time they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fayre

Herz! Mein!

Herz, mein Herz! – Heinrich Heine

© Stuart Moffatt 1971

Herz, mein Herz, sei nicht bekommen
Und ertrage dein Geschick
Neuer Frühling giebt zurück
Was der Winter dir genommen
Und wie viel ist dir geblieben!
Und wie schön is noch die Welt!
Und mein Herz, was dir gefällt
Alles, alles darfst du lieben.

Unfinished Quartet

Unfinished Quartet – Raymond Tester (1952-)

First
Mary went a-fishing on a summer’s day.
She took…

Second
This is a symbol, this is:
No two…

Third
There’s nowt so queer as folks.
Take…

Fourth
And on the bank they came to her,
.. joined

The words are the copyright of Raymond Tester (b.1952). I should like to include them here, but unless someone can put me in touch with him, and I think it is now (2010) too late, I must assume that I do not have his permission to do so. So I only include the first line of each part of the quartet above. The copyright of the music is held by Stuart Moffatt. Goe and catch!

Goe, and catch a falling starre – John Donne

Goe, and catch a falling starre,
Get with child a mandrake’s root,
Tell me, where all past years are,
Or who cleft the Divel’s foot,
Teach me to heare
Mermaids singing
Or to keep envies stinging,
And finde
What winde
Serves to’advance an honest mind.

If thou beest borne to strange sights,
Things invisible to see,
Ride ten thousand daies and nights,
Till age snow white haires on thee,
Thou, when thou retorn’st, wilt tell mee
All strange wonders, that befell thee,
And sweare
No where
Lives a woman true and fair.

If thou findst one, let mee know;
Such a pilgrimage were sweet;
Yet doe not, I would not goe,
Though at next door we might meet,
Though shee were true, when you met her,
And last, till you write your letter,
Yet shee
Will bee
False, ere I come, to – two or three.

Schatten liebe

Seraphine – Heinrich Heine

© Stuart Moffatt 1972

Schattenküsse, Schattenliebe,
Schattenleben, wunderbar!
Glaubst du, Narrin alles bliebe
Unverändet, ewig wahr?

Was wir lieblich fest bessessen,
Schwindet hin, wie Träumerein;
Und die Herzen, die vergessen,
Und die Augen schlafen ein.
sie schlafen ein.

Schattenküsse, Schattenliebe,
Schattenleben, wunderbar!
Glaubst du, Narrin alles, alles bliebe
Unverändet, ewig wahr?
